More than $100 million is being awarded to states and other agencies through the Department of Health and Human Services to help better prepare for the fight against Ebola. The funding, dubbed the Hospital Preparedness Program and Response Activities, would give a total of $194.5 million to states, according to an HHS news release. This is in addition to Ebola emergency funds set to be awarded through the Public Health Emergency Preparedness program.

HHS officials highlighted crucial lessons learned during Ebola response efforts last fall, noting the money will build on gains already made in healthcare and public health preparedness over the past decade. Among those lessons are that the safety of healthcare workers must be a top priority and the care of Ebola patients is clinically complex, with officials also noting that early identification of Ebola is key to preventing spread and improving outcomes.
